The purpose of a fly fishing vest is to hold all of your streamside fishing needs. The vest should be able to hold clippers, flies, leaders, tippets, various tools, fly fishing line, weights, fly floatants, and any other number of odds and ends. In order to hold all of these things, your vest needs pockets. The temptation is to get one with lots and lots of specialized pockets, but don't give in. You will only find yourself searching endlessly for that fly you swore you brought with you. Also, too many pockets makes for a heavy vest. Travel light and keep it simple.
So, how many pockets is too many? Most would say 50 or more is going too far. 20-30 should do the trick just fine. Remember, a fly fishing vest should be functional and light. You're there to catch the big one, not play hide and seek with your gear.
