Fly lines & backing are necessities when it comes to fly fishing. It is not uncommon for an angler to choose his or her fly line first, before picking out reel or a rod. Backing is important for purposes of taking up space on the spool (which makes rewinding the line take less time) and also as a backup for if the fish draws the line out.
