“The
Guides for Ghenghis Khan’s Home Waters”
Mongolia River Outfitters offers classic fly-fishing for taimen and trout in an
exotic, isolated wilderness where cowboys still ride the open range and wolves
still howl at sunset. MRO offers a unique “fly in/fly out” “no shuttle”
program. On this trip you leisurely float and fish from one beautiful,
streamside ger camp to the next, fishing a different section of amazing river
every day for six days. The countryside is stunning. The Mongolian
culture is fascinating. The taimen and trout fishing is superb. The
international guides are some of the best in the business. The service,
food and accommodation is – of course - extraordinary. There is a limit
of 6 rods per departure and these very popular trips commonly fill a year in
advance.
Mongolia
River Outfitters is a "fly-in/fly-out" and "no shuttle"
operation.
The charter flight from the capital takes less then 90 minutes. Usually
within an hour of landing, you’re on the river. Once on the river,
clients don't spend time driving up and down the creek. Every day you and your
guide fish a new stretch of river. While you’re fishing, your bags are
shuttled overland. Every evening you stay in one of six pre-established and
very comfortable streamside ger camps, complete with attentive staff, great
food, hot showers, linens, and cozy wood burning stoves. On a typical
week, you will cover about sixty miles of water... Never fishing the same
section twice and never being shuttled once.
Mongolia River Outfitters uses non-motorized Aire rafts with full-house casting
frames. Fishing is a combination of float and wade.
The stream's most famous residents are the gigantic Taimen (Hucho taimen).
Taimen have bragging rights as the world's largest member of the Salmonidae
family. In Mongolia, Taimen will typically average 80 - 100 cm (over three
feet). However, these rivers hold monsters over 150 cm (fifty inches or
more).
Dry fly fishing for taimen is an incredible addiction and MRO has many clients
who return year after year to feed it, but it’s not easy. A big, mature
taimen will be between 30 and 50 years old. They didn’t get that old and
strong by being stupid. Compare it to fishing for steelhead. You'll see
plenty of big fish and while several clients each year hook more than six
good-sized fish in a single day, persistent anglers can realistically expect to
hook at least one Taimen daily.
The other thing that we really like about Mongolia River Outfitters is the
extraordinary trout fishing. Visitors to this outfitter frequently
describe their trip as the best trout fishing they have experienced anywhere in
the world… better than Kamchatka, Montana, New Zealand, or South America.
When clients tire of casting the 9w for forty inch fish, they “take a break” by
picking up the 5w and nailing twenty inch trout.
The main target is Amur trout (Brachymystax savinovi). This is a beautiful
species unknown to most fly anglers and Mongolia River Outfitters is the only
outfitter we recommend if you want to fish for this unique species. It is a
beautiful, thick bodied fish distinguished by a golden brown body accented with
large black spots. The trout's aggressive attitude reminds most folks of big
browns. This spectacular fish commonly measures well over 55 cm (twenty-two
inches), making them a fantastic challenge on a light fly rod. (Bring on the
hoppers!)
The lenok (Brachymystax lenok) are awesome fun. They are another endemic found
throughout Mongolia and distinguished from the trout by their bright red sides
and slightly down-turned mouth.
Mongolia River Outfitter trips are fly-fishing only. There is a limit of 6 rods
per departure, but MRO usually launches at least four boats with guides.
As a result, guests general have several days on the river with their own
guide and boat. Mongolia River Outfitters is a recognized leader in
Taimen conservation. They follow a strict catch and release policy. Their
international fly-fishing guides are some of the best professionals in the
business.
With nearly six full days of fishing and only eight nights in country, this
itinerary maximizes your time on the water and minimizes your time bouncing
around looking for fish.
These trips usually fill at least one year in advance. Make your
reservations early.
