Wild and Rugged — Seneca Rocks, the Elk, and Appalachian Wilderness Trout
West Virginia's mountain streams are among the most underrated trout fisheries in the eastern United States — cold, clear, and largely unpressured, flowing through a landscape of forested ridges and remote hollows that sees a fraction of the angling attention directed at more famous Appalachian waters. The Monongahela National Forest alone encompasses over 900,000 acres of public land with hundreds of miles of native and wild trout streams, most accessible only by foot.
The Elk River headwaters above Slatyfork offer exceptional wild brown and rainbow trout fishing in one of the most scenic valleys in the state. The Cranberry River and its tributaries in the Cranberry Backcountry provide remote wild trout fishing in a roadless wilderness area. The Williams River, flowing through the Gauley Ranger District, is a designated West Virginia Scenic River with trophy trout sections managed under strict catch-and-release regulations. Near the Virginia border, the Greenbrier River and its headwater tributaries carry populations of wild brook trout in pristine freestone habitat.
The Seneca Rocks area in Pendleton County is a hub for visiting anglers, combining the dramatic quartzite formations of Seneca Rocks with the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac — a limestone-influenced stream known for selective rising trout and exceptional hatches including the green drake emergence that draws dry fly anglers from across the region every June.
