On the Water

How to Fish It

Build the V-wing carefully — one CDC feather split, not two. The split is what gives the right pitch and balance.

When to Use

Picky risers. Selective spring creek fish. Blind prospecting when no hatch is visible.

History & Lore

In 2019 Devin Olsen and Lance Egan hosted their friend Pablo from the Spanish National Fly Fishing Team in Utah. Pablo kept saying the fish were 'always Monster' — which Devin and Lance initially took as reference to his dry fly. The nickname stuck. The Monster Dry is Devin's version of the Spanish-style split-CDC V-wing mayfly. The V-wing has specific properties of air resistance, weight distribution, and wing profile that trout seem to love. The fly doesn't specifically imitate any insect, but it has moved fish during PMD hatches, caddis emergences, and yellow-sally sessions on heavily-pressured rivers. As a searching dry, it is equally effective.
