Christmas Island Outfitters Lodge is the premier fly fishing operation on Kiritimati, the world's largest coral atoll, located in the central Pacific Ocean roughly midway between Hawaii and Fiji. The atoll encompasses over 150 square miles of shallow lagoon, interior flats, and oceanside reef systems that support what many experienced saltwater anglers consider the single greatest concentration of bonefish on the planet. Fish numbering in the thousands cruise the white-sand flats in tight schools, and encounters with individual trophies exceeding ten pounds are a regular occurrence rather than a once-in-a-lifetime event.
The lodge operates from a compound near the village of London on the atoll's north shore, with I-Kiribati guides who have fished these flats since childhood. Each morning, anglers board vehicles for a short drive to the day's fishing grounds, then wade the firm coral-sand flats on foot with their guide, covering miles of productive water over the course of a full day. Beyond bonefish, the atoll's flats hold giant trevally, milkfish, triggerfish, and bluefin trevally, species that test both tackle and angling skill to their absolute limits.
Accommodations are simple but clean, reflecting the atoll's remote location and limited infrastructure. Meals feature fresh-caught fish, tropical fruits, and imported provisions. “I would highly recommend Christmas Island Lodge when traveling to fish Christmas Island. Close to the airport, very close to the Lagoon, a lot closer than other places to Korean Wreck and Huff Dam. All situated on a postcard perfect tropical expanse of beach in a pretty isolated area. Private one bedroom air conditioned bungalows a stones throw to the surf. Good food and appetizers, great one on one guides. CSI is very accommodating to your particular needs and to the type of fishing you'd like to do. There was no hidden costs, everything except hard liquor, getting there and tips was included. Staff was really friendly and bent over backwards to make your stay special. There was even a night of traditional dance and music performed by a local church youth group. I haven't even mentioned the fishing, This was my first time of fishing saltwater flats, there was tons of opportunities for fish of all species and sizes no matter your level of skill. I was completely satisfied with my catches, even catching some Peach Face Triggers that are considered hard to catch, and they are but so addicting to target. My skills, knowledge and confidence grew during the course of the week. For being such an exotic place it's only a three hour flight from Honolulu, very easy to get to. Looking forward to a return trip.”
