Islamorada Flats Lodge is a purpose-built saltwater fly fishing operation located on the bay side of Islamorada, the self-proclaimed sportfishing capital of the world. The lodge caters exclusively to fly anglers pursuing the storied grand slam of the Florida Keys flats: bonefish, permit, and tarpon, three species that together represent the pinnacle of shallow-water fly fishing challenge. Each demands different tactics, different flies, and a different angling temperament, and the guides who operate from this lodge have devoted their careers to mastering the art of putting their clients within casting range of all three.
The lodge's fleet of technical poling skiffs launches each morning from a private dock into the vast network of turtle grass flats, mangrove shorelines, and tidal channels that make the Middle Keys one of the most productive saltwater fly fishing destinations on Earth. Spring brings massive schools of migrating tarpon that stage along the bridges and channels, providing shots at fish exceeding a hundred pounds. Summer and fall shift the focus to permit tailing on the oceanside flats and bonefish cruising the backcountry basins. The guides read tidal movements, wind patterns, and seasonal migrations with an intuition developed over decades on these waters.
Accommodations are clean, comfortable, and entirely oriented toward the fishing lifestyle. A tackle room with rod storage, fly-tying benches, and a rigging station ensures that guests spend their evenings preparing for the next morning's pursuit rather than worrying about logistics.
“The best place in the Keys! Great location Great attention to details and customer service!! Our room was fabulous and we were about as far from the shore as you could get but that was about a 2 minute, lovely walk. Room was quiet with a wonderful screened in porch that was perfect for enjoying the sounds of the nearby waterfall. Just a wonderful place! Oh, and Jessica Wood took fabulous care of us!!!”
“My husband and I recently spent three nights at Cheeca Resort in Isla Morada, and overall, it was a beautiful and relaxing stay. Check-in was smooth, and the receptionist was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Our room was spotless, the bed was very comfortable, and the oceanfront view was absolutely gorgeous. We paid to upgrade to an ocean view with a private jacuzzi tub, and we’re so glad we did—it truly elevated the experience. The water sports staff were fantastic and very helpful, providing paddleboards so we could explore and enjoy the stunning property from the water. We also dined at all of the restaurants on-site. While the food was decent overall, it lacked flavor in some dishes—the pasta, in particular, was quite bland. That said, the service at every restaurant was exceptional. The staff consistently went out of their way to make us feel welcome and taken care of, which made a big difference. Unfortunately, our only negative experience was with a manager on duty. On our second day, I asked her where the hammocks on the property were located so I could relax and read. She quietly laughed at me and said, “I have been managing here for ten years and we do not have any hammocks.” I was confused, as there are multiple photos of hammocks on both the resort’s website and current Instagram page. When I tried to show her the photos, she turned away and brushed me off. The interaction made me feel dismissed and as though I wasn’t valued as a guest. It’s a shame, because aside from this interaction, the resort staff truly made the stay enjoyable. Cheeca is a beautiful property with many wonderful employees, and with a bit more consistency in guest service at the management level, it could be an exceptional experience.”
“Infested with roaches and management did not seem to care. I asked about their protocol since they were small roaches and I thought they might be bed bugs. (In the end, I don’t think they were bedbugs because the roaches were numerous and small but bigger than bedbugs so probably a different type of cockroach). They said we’ll move you to another room and have our pest control check after the room is vacant. Several roaches got INTO THE BACKPACK and there was a roach on the wall waiting in the new room. Nightmare fuel. I guess they didn’t even bother to check the new room. This was for a business trip after working 12+ hour days. Moved to a third room. Had to ask for them to wash the backpack and clothes to hopefully not bring them home. No proactive measures or solutions, I had to come up with that remedy. Absolute nightmare. I would be understanding if they handled things better. A hotel with a restaurant on the water is going to have pests. But moving to 3 rooms, having roaches in your bag and on your clothes, and having to ask for the bare minimum of washing the stuff that had roaches crawling on it because they weren’t going to do anything about it is just unacceptable. Otherwise it’s a nice property with lots to do that we wanted to return to as a family but how can you rest when there are roaches in the room and your concerns over a health hazard are not properly addressed? I’m writing this review to warn anyone staying there to thoroughly check the room before you settle in.”
