Sweetwater Travel operates the most established and conservation-focused taimen fishing camps in Mongolia, providing access to the Eg-Uur watershed and other pristine river systems in northern Mongolia where the world's largest salmonid still thrives. The operation is structured as a series of mobile ger camps and river camps that move with the fishing conditions, allowing anglers to cover extensive stretches of river in pursuit of taimen, lenok, and Siberian grayling in some of the most remote and beautiful wilderness remaining in Asia.
The camps are comfortable without being luxurious, reflecting the expedition nature of Mongolian taimen fishing. Traditional gers (the round felt tents of Mongolian nomads) provide warm, dry sleeping quarters, while communal dining tents serve hearty meals prepared by camp cooks. The guiding staff combines Mongolian river knowledge with Western fly fishing expertise, ensuring that anglers of all experience levels can effectively fish for taimen using the large streamers, mouse patterns, and articulated flies that these apex predators demand.
Sweetwater Travel has been at the forefront of taimen conservation in Mongolia, working with local communities and government agencies to protect critical taimen habitat and establish sustainable fishing practices. Their strict catch-and-release protocols, barbless hook requirements, and fish handling training have set the standard for responsible taimen fishing operations worldwide. A portion of each trip fee goes directly to habitat conservation and community development programs in the fishing areas.
