Tongariro River Lodge commands a sweeping vista of the Tongariro River and the volcanic peaks of the central North Island, providing the definitive New Zealand fly fishing lodge experience in a setting of dramatic natural beauty. The lodge sits on the banks of New Zealand's most famous trout river, where large rainbow and brown trout — descendants of fish introduced from California and Scotland over a century ago — run upriver from Lake Taupo in numbers that still astonish visiting anglers accustomed to more pressured fisheries. The river's accessibility, combined with its extraordinary productivity, makes it the ideal centerpiece for a New Zealand fishing vacation.
The lodge accommodations reflect a distinctly New Zealand sensibility: understated elegance, native timber construction, and an emphasis on blending with the surrounding landscape rather than competing with it. Suites overlook the river, and the lodge's restaurant features contemporary New Zealand cuisine with an emphasis on local lamb, venison, and seafood. An extensive wine list showcases the country's celebrated Marlborough and Central Otago producers.
Guided fishing from the lodge covers the Tongariro's diverse water types, from the heavy runs and deep pools of the lower river to the intimate pocket water of the upper gorge. Helicopter excursions to remote backcountry streams on the South Island can be arranged for guests seeking the ultimate sight-fishing experience — stalking individual trophy trout in crystalline water visible from altitude. The lodge also serves as a base for exploring Tongariro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its volcanic landscapes, alpine crossing tracks, and unique native bush.
“Tongariro lodge is in a great location a short drive from the town centre and good staging point for activities like the Tongariro crossing. We stayed in Villa 6. On the plus side the villa is quite spacious and has 3 bathrooms, which was great for our family. Overall the Villa is probably getting a bit dated and could do with a revamp (things like the blinds didn't all work properly). While the main areas (floors/bathroom) were clean, it could do with a deep clean. My impression is that the Villas may be privately owned so the experience may not be uniform across Villas. The staff that we interacted with were very friendly and helpful.”
“My wife and I stayed just 2 nights and did one day of fly fishing on the Tongariro River. The lodge and the grounds were in a beautiful green secluded setting close to the river. Our villa was completely equipped and very spacious, and Guido and the entire staff made us feel very welcome. Overall, a wonderful place and stay.”
“We used the lodge as our accommodation for two nights whilst walking in the Tongariro National Park. The grounds were beautiful and the chalet was pristine and very comfortable. The staff were all really nice and helpful and we loved the …”
