Alaska · freestone · Arctic Grayling, Chum Salmon, Coho Salmon, Northern Pike
The Chena River is interior Alaska's most accessible fly fishing destination and the gateway stream for visiting anglers exploring the Fairbanks area. Flowing west from its headwaters in the White Mountains through the Chena River State Recreation Area before emptying into the Tanana River just west of Fairbanks, the Chena offers a uniquely road-accessible interior Alaska fishing experience that requires no floatplane, no remote lodge, and no multi-day wilderness commitment — just a fishing license and a short drive down Chena Hot Springs Road.
Arctic grayling are the primary draw and the signature species of the upper Chena. These beautiful fish — with their impossibly tall dorsal fins, iridescent purple flanks, and willingness to rise aggressively to dry flies — are everything that interior Alaska's reputation promises. Grayling in the upper Chena typically run 10 to 16 inches, with occasional fish reaching 18 to 20 inches in the deeper pools of the state recreation area. They are voracious dry fly eaters that will take elk hair caddis, parachute Adams, and stimulators with abandon during the summer months when insect activity peaks.
The upper Chena within the Chena River State Recreation Area provides the most consistent arctic grayling fishing. Multiple access points along Chena Hot Springs Road — which follows the river for over 50 miles — allow anglers to hop in and out at numerous pools and riffles. The river is clear and relatively shallow in most sections, making wading easy and visibility excellent. North Pole Bridge, Tors Trail, and the area around Chena Hot Springs Resort all provide productive fishing. The state recreation area also holds northern pike in its slower, weedy backchannels.
In addition to grayling, the lower Chena within Fairbanks and downstream toward the Tanana supports salmon runs. Chum salmon and silver (Coho) salmon move through the lower river in August and September, providing exciting salmon fly fishing accessible from the city. The lower Chena's tea-colored glacial influence near the Tanana confluence makes this section less suited to sight fishing but productive for anglers swinging streamers through holding water.
The midnight sun phenomenon makes summer fishing on the Chena extraordinary — the long light hours allow for virtually all-night fishing sessions during the June and July solstice period, and evening caddis hatches can stretch past midnight with fish rising in golden light at 11pm. The combination of easy access, beautiful grayling, and genuine interior Alaska wilderness character makes the Chena a perfect introduction to Alaska fly fishing.
