The Kenai River on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula is one of the most prolific anadromous fish rivers in the world and arguably the finest all-around fly fishing destination in the state for visiting anglers. The river flows from Kenai Lake through a stunning glacial valley to Cook Inlet, passing through two distinct sections that offer radically different fishing experiences. The upper Kenai between Kenai Lake and Skilak Lake is a turquoise-tinted, gin-clear river where trophy-sized rainbow trout gorge on salmon eggs and flesh patterns from July through October, growing to legendary proportions on the protein windfall delivered by millions of spawning sockeye, king, and silver salmon.
The lower Kenai below Skilak Lake is a broader, more powerful river that hosts the main salmon runs and supports a world-renowned king salmon fishery that draws anglers from every corner of the globe. While conventional tackle dominates the king salmon fishery, fly anglers find outstanding opportunities for sockeye salmon on the Russian River confluence, silver salmon throughout the lower river in August and September, and the remarkable late-season rainbow trout fishing that follows the salmon spawn. The Kenai's accessibility from Anchorage, roughly three hours by road, makes it the most convenient major Alaskan fishery for visiting anglers, and the surrounding infrastructure of lodges, guides, and fly shops ensures that both first-time Alaska visitors and seasoned veterans can find the right level of support for their fishing ambitions.
Check Alaska Department of Fish and Game for current regulations. King salmon regulations are strictly managed with in-season emergency orders. Specific gear and bait restrictions vary by section and season.
