Overview

The Metolius River is one of Oregon's most unusual and humbling fly fishing destinations — a spring creek born fully formed from the base of Black Butte, fed by snowmelt that has filtered through the porous volcanic rock of the Cascade Range for years before emerging crystal clear and a constant 48 degrees year-round. It is a river that appears suddenly from the earth, becomes immediately large and powerful, and stays that way for its entire 29-mile journey to Lake Billy Chinook.

The Metolius is expert water — full stop. The combination of gin-clear visibility, constant flow, wild fish conditioned by heavy fishing pressure, and the precision demands of spring creek presentation make this one of the most technically demanding trout fisheries in the Pacific Northwest. The fish here have seen every fly in the catalog. They reject lazy presentations, sloppy approaches, and imprecise imitations without hesitation. Come prepared, or come to practice.

All trout on the Metolius must be released — no exceptions, no hatchery fish, no kept catch. This is a wild trout sanctuary, and the regulations reflect that commitment. The primary species are wild rainbow trout (running 8 to 24 inches), brown trout, and the river's most prized resident: wild bull trout, which can reach 15 pounds and respond to large streamers fished deep along undercut banks and logjams. Bull trout are federally threatened — handle with extreme care and minimize time out of water.

Dry fly fishing on the Metolius follows a predictable seasonal rhythm. The first 11 miles below the springs are the most productive for surface fishing, with green drakes (#8-12) creating spectacular hatches in early summer. PMDs, caddis, Blue-winged Olives, and Pale Evening Duns carry the action through summer and into fall. Nymphing with precise dead drifts is the most consistent method year-round — the river's current speed demands heavily weighted rigs and attentive mending.

The corridor through the Deschutes National Forest is spectacular: old-growth ponderosa pine towering over meadow banks, osprey fishing alongside you, and almost zero development visible from the water. Camp Sherman, the small community near the headwaters, has the Fly Fisher's Place and other services. The upper river above Camp Sherman Road Bridge is catch-and-release, fly fishing only.

Access is excellent throughout the upper sections via maintained trails, with multiple campgrounds along the river corridor. A visit in late May or June hits the peak green drake hatch and early summer dry fly fishing. Fall brings technical BWO fishing and the possibility of encountering bull trout on the move.
