Overview

The North Branch of the Potomac River below Jennings-Randolph Dam on the Maryland-West Virginia border is one of the most underrated tailwater trout fisheries in the mid-Atlantic region. Fed by cold hypolimnetic releases from the deep Jennings-Randolph Reservoir, the North Branch maintains prime trout temperatures for approximately 20 miles below the dam, supporting a mixed population of rainbow and brown trout that regularly exceeds 18 inches. The river here flows through a remote and dramatic Appalachian valley, with ridge lines rising steeply on both sides and a wilderness character that belies its proximity to Washington and Baltimore. Access is via a gravel road along the river corridor, and the combination of distance from major population centers and modest reputation keeps angling pressure well below what the quality of fishing would typically attract. The North Branch is a wade fishery throughout its best sections, with a mix of gravel riffles, defined pools, and long tailouts that hold fish in predictable lies. Hatches include reliable Blue-winged Olives in spring and fall, sporadic Sulphurs in May and June, and consistent midge activity through the colder months. For anglers based in the DC area who find the Gunpowder crowded and want genuine solitude with comparable fish quality, the North Branch is an ideal alternative. The Barnum area near the dam provides the most consistent fishing, while downstream sections add variety and reduced pressure.
