Overview

Few rivers carry the literary mystique of the Two-Hearted River. Made immortal by Ernest Hemingway's 1925 short story "Big Two-Hearted River," this remote Upper Peninsula stream has become a pilgrimage site for fly anglers seeking wild brook trout in an untouched wilderness setting. Located in Luce County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the river flows northeast through the Ottawa National Forest before emptying into Lake Superior near Newberry — and it delivers on every expectation that the Hemingway legend creates.

The Two-Hearted is primarily a wild brook trout river, and that distinction matters enormously to its devoted following. Unlike many Michigan streams that rely on hatchery supplementation, the Two-Hearted holds robust naturally reproducing populations of brook trout throughout its length, supplemented by rainbow trout and steelhead in season. The river runs cold, clear, and tannic — stained the color of dark tea by the cedar swamps it drains — with a classic sand-and-gravel bottom that provides ideal spawning and rearing habitat.

The upper reaches above High Bridge are intimate small-stream water, best fished with a short rod and close-quarters presentations. Brookies dominate here, typically running 7 to 12 inches with occasional fish pushing 15 inches or better in the deeper pools. Below High Bridge the river widens and deepens, transitioning into floatable water that rewards both wading and canoe-camping expeditions. The lower river near the Lake Superior mouth receives steelhead runs in spring and fall and Coho salmon in autumn.

Access to the Two-Hearted requires commitment. No fly shops are around the corner, cell service is sparse, and the gravel roads can be rough. But therein lies the appeal: this is one of the few places in the Midwest where you can wade for wild brookies all day and never encounter another angler. The Rivermouth Campground operated by the Michigan DNR provides the primary base camp at the Lake Superior mouth, while the Two-Hearted River State Forest Campground offers access to the upper river.

The hatch calendar mirrors other northern Michigan streams but runs slightly later due to elevation and latitude. Hendricksons in late May, caddis through June, the beloved Michigan Hex hatch in late June and early July, and terrestrials through August keep dry fly enthusiasts occupied across the season. The combination of wilderness setting, wild fish, and hallowed literary heritage makes the Two-Hearted one of America's most singular fly fishing destinations.
