Overview

The West Branch of the Penobscot River is the crown jewel of Maine fly fishing and one of the last great landlocked Atlantic salmon rivers in North America. Flowing from Ripogenus Dam through the wilderness gateway of Baxter State Park country, this powerful freestone river offers an experience that few eastern anglers ever find: remote water, wild fish, and a setting so untamed that moose outnumber anglers on most days. Below Ripogenus Dam, cold dam releases sustain ideal temperatures year-round, creating a de facto tailwater that supports exceptional landlocked salmon fishing through late spring and again in fall. The Penobscot system historically carried migratory Atlantic salmon from the sea, and while anadromous runs are a fraction of historical levels, the landlocked salmon that evolved in these waters remain abundant and acrobatic, regularly running 16 to 22 inches and fighting like fish twice their size. The river is predominantly a float fishery through its most productive upper reaches, with guides running drift boats and canoes through the long pools and boulder-strewn runs below the gorge. Wade access exists at Abol Bridge and other takeouts along the Golden Road, the private logging road that provides the primary access corridor into this remote country. Regulations on the upper river include fly-fishing-only sections and strict catch-and-release requirements for landlocked salmon, reflecting the conservation ethic that has kept this fishery viable.
