Rodrigo Sandoval is a Chilean fly fishing guide who has spent sixteen years exploring and guiding on the rivers of the Aysen Region, the wild heart of Chilean Patagonia. Operating from the small town of Coyhaique along the Carretera Austral, Rodrigo provides access to a vast network of rivers, spring creeks, and lakes that hold healthy populations of rainbow and brown trout in settings of almost incomprehensible natural beauty. The rivers of Chilean Patagonia are younger fisheries than their Argentine counterparts, and many of the streams Rodrigo fishes receive so few visiting anglers that the trout have little wariness of flies, creating opportunities for truly explosive fishing.
Rodrigo specializes in float trips on the Rio Simpson and Rio Baker, two of the region's largest and most productive trout rivers, as well as hike-in excursions to hidden spring creeks and backcountry streams that flow through old-growth lenga beech forest beneath the snowcapped Andes. His float trips combine outstanding fishing with the visual spectacle of glacial rivers cutting through basalt canyons and temperate rainforest, a landscape that rivals anything in New Zealand or the Canadian Rockies for sheer dramatic impact.
A trained ecologist before he became a full-time guide, Rodrigo brings a scientific perspective to his river observations and is actively involved in monitoring trout populations and aquatic insect communities across the Aysen watershed. He guides in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
