The Animas River flowing through Durango is a beloved Colorado fly fishing destination that combines accessibility, diverse hatches, and genuine wild trout quality in a setting framed by the iconic San Juan Mountains. Rising near Silverton at over 9,000 feet and dropping through a dramatic canyon before entering the Animas Valley, the river offers over 50 miles of quality trout water that ranges from technical pocket water in the upper canyon to broad, pool-riffle sequences through the valley and city of Durango itself.
Durango's urban fishery is one of the most accessible in the state — nearly seven miles of public river runs through or adjacent to the city from the 32nd Street Bridge south to the Rivera Bridge. Bike and foot trails parallel much of this water, making it easy to walk until you find the right fish or the right hatch. The Division of Wildlife Fish Hatchery at 16th Street provides another convenient in-town access point for wade anglers.
The Animas runs as a classic freestone river — susceptible to spring runoff but dramatically productive once the water clears in late June. The river's mixed species composition, including brown trout, rainbow trout, and cutthroat in varying proportions by reach, keeps the experience fresh throughout the season. Brown trout dominate the lower valley sections near Durango, while cutthroats increasingly appear as you move upriver toward Silverton.
Hatches on the Animas are impressively varied for a single river system. Salmon flies emerge in June in the upper canyon reaches, creating unforgettable dry fly chaos. Golden stoneflies follow and extend stonefly action into early July. PMDs are reliable through summer in the slower runs, while Trico spinners blanket pools in August and September mornings. Caddis are the most consistent hatch of the season, bridging the gap between stonefly season and fall BWOs. Winter fishing with midges near Durango stays viable well into December in moderate years.
Downstream from Durango, the river flows through the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation — fishing here requires a tribal permit, but the water is exceptional for those willing to arrange access. Float fishing with a raft or kayak opens additional stretches, particularly in the productive middle canyon between Baker's Bridge and Durango. Streamers are highly effective for large browns in September and October as fish begin pre-spawn feeding.
The Animas combines everything great about Colorado fly fishing: dramatic mountain scenery, diverse hatches, quality wild trout, and easy access from a vibrant outdoor-oriented community. It remains one of the best trout rivers in the San Juan Mountains region.
Standard Colorado fishing regulations apply throughout most of the Animas River. Catch-and-release sections exist in portions of the Durango city limits — check CPW regulations for current year boundaries. Barbless hooks are encouraged throughout the city stretch. The Ute Mountain Ute Reservation downstream of Durango requires a separate tribal fishing permit. Valid Colorado fishing license required.
