Estancia Rio Grande is a working sheep ranch turned world-class fly fishing lodge on the banks of the Rio Grande in northern Patagonia, Argentina. The estancia controls private access to several kilometers of river that hold some of the largest sea-run brown trout found anywhere on Earth. Fish averaging eight to twelve pounds are commonplace, and each season produces specimens exceeding twenty pounds — migratory brown trout of a size that exists in the modern angling world only in the rivers of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. The fishing is conducted almost exclusively by Spey casting or two-handed rod techniques, swinging large wet flies through the river's broad pools and deep runs.
The lodge occupies the original estancia homestead, a whitewashed adobe structure surrounded by Lombardy poplars that provide welcome shelter from the Patagonian wind. The interior has been thoughtfully renovated to provide comfortable accommodations without sacrificing the building's authentic gaucho heritage. Thick walls, hardwood floors, and wood-burning stoves create a warm refuge after long days on the wind-swept river. The dining program is centered around the Argentine tradition of the asado, with whole lambs roasted over open coals accompanied by Malbec from the Mendoza region.
The lodge's guide team includes several former national casting champions who bring deep technical knowledge to the art of Spey casting in Patagonian conditions. Wind is a constant companion here, and guides work closely with clients to refine their casting mechanics and line management, ensuring that when a massive sea-run brown materializes in the current, the angler is prepared to deliver the fly.
