Michigan DNR no longer maintains an active Blue Ribbon list; current rules are stream Types 1-4. Upper Black River Council access notes, written with MDNR fisheries input, list Canada Creek as Type 1: fishing and possession last Saturday in April through September 30; brook trout 7-inch minimum; brown trout 8-inch minimum; rainbow 10-inch minimum; 5 trout and salmon combined, no more than 3 fish 15 inches or greater. Michigan fishing license required. Stay off Canada Creek Ranch private land. Verify the 2026 digest and Inland Trout and Salmon map.
Canada Creek held a 12-mile historic Blue Ribbon trout reach in Presque Isle and Montmorency counties, from the Montague Creek junction to the Cheboygan County line. Michigan DNR no longer keeps an active Blue Ribbon list. Inland trout water is typed 1 through 4 now.
MDNR fisheries biologist Tim Cwalinski, writing for the Upper Black River Council access guide, lists this creek as Type 1. Brook trout are the fish. The creek does not become good trout water until Montague Creek, which sits inside privately owned Canada Creek Ranch. Public water starts downstream of the ranch at the M-33 county-line access.
Named MDNR public sites include CR-634, DNR Stairs, Canada Creek Highway, and the M-33 county-line stairs. No live USGS discharge gauge sits on Canada Creek. Confirm the 2026 Michigan Fishing Regulations and the Inland Trout and Salmon map before you fish.
