The North Fork Shoshone River runs from the Shoshone National Forest boundary near Pahaska down to Buffalo Bill Reservoir, paralleling the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway (US 14/16/20) between Cody and Yellowstone's East Entrance. Field & Stream has named this stretch one of the best trout streams in America.
This is a freestone canyon river, cold and fast, holding rainbow and Yellowstone cutthroat trout along with occasional cutbow hybrids. USGS gauges track flow near Wapiti and closer to the reservoir. Public access runs through a string of Shoshone National Forest campgrounds along the highway, including Big Game Campground, which sits directly on the river.
Runoff from the Absaroka Range keeps the water high and off-color into June most years. Fish it after runoff drops, typically July through September, for the best dry fly water. Grizzly bears are active in this corridor; food storage rules apply at every campground.
