Area 1 stream creel: three trout per day or in possession, no more than one trout over 16 inches, and no more than one cutthroat over 12 inches, unless posted otherwise. Gros Ventre River from the eastern boundary of the National Elk Refuge downstream to the U.S. Highway 26/89/191 Bridge in Teton County: National Elk Refuge regulations prohibit fishing from December 1 through March 31 (WGFD Area 1, updated January 7, 2026). Live baitfish prohibited in Area 1. Grand Teton National Park water requires a Wyoming license and park fishing rules. Verify current WGFD and NPS rules.

The Gros Ventre River (grow-vont) drains the Gros Ventre Range east of Jackson and enters the Snake on the valley floor. Native Snake River cutthroat are the fish. The 1925 Gros Ventre Slide created Lower Slide Lake. The Newbold Dam below Kelly was removed in 2013, reopening main-stem passage.
Two live USGS gauges sit on the fished water: 13014500 Gros Ventre River at Kelly, WY (43.62088889, -110.6230556) and 13015000 Gros Ventre River at Zenith, WY (43.5572222, -110.7627778). Crystal Creek Campground (USFS 43.610451, -110.431422) is the mapped Bridger-Teton access east of Kelly on Gros Ventre River Road (Forest Road 30400), on designated Wild and Scenic water.
Wyoming Area 1 stream limits apply. From the eastern boundary of the National Elk Refuge downstream to US 26/89/191, National Elk Refuge rules prohibit fishing December 1 through March 31. Gros Ventre Road east of Kelly closes in winter. Best fishing is after runoff, typically late June through September.
