The Encampment River drops out of the Sierra Madre range on the Wyoming-Colorado border and runs through Encampment Canyon on Medicine Bow National Forest before reaching the town of Riverside. A stretch of the upper river carries a federal Wild and Scenic River study designation.
Brown trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout hold in this cold freestone canyon water. The Encampment River Trail follows the canyon for hiking and wade access into the wilderness study area upstream of Riverside. USGS gauges track flow near the canyon mouth and through town.
Snowmelt off the Sierra Madre and Medicine Bow ranges keeps flows high into June. Fish it after runoff for the best wading conditions, typically July through September.
