Chevelon Creek, called Chevelon Canyon in its upper reach, is a long Mogollon Rim drainage. It starts where Woods Canyon and Willow Springs Canyon meet and runs north toward the Little Colorado River near Winslow. Above Chevelon Canyon Lake, Arizona Game and Fish manages it as a Blue Ribbon trophy fishery for wild brown and rainbow trout.
The rules change by section. From the Willow Springs Creek confluence to Chevelon Crossing, including Chevelon Canyon Lake, the limit is two trout and you may use artificial flies and lures only. The goal is to protect big wild browns. Below Chevelon Crossing, rainbow and brown trout are unlimited from September 1 through March 31, and statewide limits apply the rest of the year. Below the lake, the creek also carries roundtail chub and native suckers.
Chevelon Crossing Campground, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, sits on the creek off Forest Road 504. It is free and primitive, with vault toilets and no drinking water. Chevelon Canyon Lake Campground is the base for the upper canyon.
