Michigan DNR no longer maintains an active Blue Ribbon list; current rules are stream Types 1-4 plus any Gear Restricted listing. Confirm the 2026 Michigan Fishing Regulations and the Inland Trout and Salmon map for the Pine River in Manistee, Lake, and Osceola counties (this is not the Oscoda County Pine). Michigan fishing license required. On the National Scenic River corridor, a watercraft permit is required Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend (recreation.gov). Stay on Forest Service landings; private land is posted.
The Pine River is a Manistee tributary, not the main Manistee. Historic Blue Ribbon water ran 57 miles from the North and East Branch junction to Tippy Pond. Michigan DNR no longer keeps an active Blue Ribbon list. Inland trout water is typed 1 through 4 now.
The lower 26 miles is a National Scenic River (1992). Gradient averages about 7 percent, the steepest mean slope in the Lower Peninsula. Clay banks, boulders, and logjams hold wild rainbow, brown, and brook trout. This Pine is not stocked and has no steelhead or salmon run. Pike and smallmouth show in the lower water near Tippy.
Elm Flats is the start of the permitted Scenic River stretch. Dobson Bridge, Peterson Bridge, and Low Bridge are Forest Service landings with parking. A watercraft permit is required Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Live USGS gauge 04125460 reports discharge at High School Bridge near Hoxeyville.
