Wyoming fishing license required. Verify current Wyoming Game and Fish Department regulations for the Salt River drainage and Star Valley. Much of the riverbank is private ranch land; use bridge crossings, county road right-of-way, and other public access points only.
The Salt River winds through Star Valley on the west side of the Salt River Range, from headwaters near Smoot north through Afton and Thayne to Palisades Reservoir near Alpine. Bridger-Teton National Forest borders much of the upper drainage.
This meadow and riffle river holds Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat trout along with rainbow and brown trout. It fishes more like a spring creek in its lower reaches through the valley floor, with slower, clearer water than the freestone rivers draining the surrounding mountains. USGS gauges track flow from Smoot down through Thayne.
Star Valley's ranch land borders much of the river; respect posted private property and use bridge and county road access. Runoff clears earlier here than in the high country, often by mid-June.
