Sand Creek flows out of the Black Hills near Sundance, through the historic Ranch A property, a former Roosevelt-era retreat now managed by Wyoming Game and Fish Department as a public fishing and wildlife habitat area. This is spring-creek character water: clear, cold, and slow enough for technical dry fly and nymph fishing.
Brown trout dominate, with occasional brook trout in the upper reaches near the South Dakota line. USGS gauges near Sundance and Ranch A track flow through the property. Ranch A itself has walking trails and stocked ponds in addition to the creek.
This is a small, clear stream that fishes best with light tippet and careful approach. Wyoming Game and Fish stocks and manages the Ranch A reach directly.
