About

Wyoming Trout Guides is a full-service guide operation and outfitter based in Casper, Wyoming, serving the North Platte River system through the heart of the state. The North Platte near Casper is a large, powerful river that fishes very differently from the famous tailwater sections further south — a broad western river with diverse structure, excellent public access through Platte River Wilderness Study Area and Grey Reef, and a trophy rainbow and brown trout fishery that receives a fraction of the angling pressure found on more-celebrated Wyoming waters. Grey Reef, a productive tailwater section downstream of Alcova Reservoir, is the crown jewel of the operation — a spring-fed run holding some of the largest rainbow trout in the state in water that's accessible, wade-friendly, and fishable year-round.

The guide service covers the full North Platte corridor from Alcova downstream through Casper and the canyon sections, including both wade and drift boat options calibrated to current flows and conditions. Staff guides are multi-season professionals who understand the Grey Reef fishery's unique demands — long drifts, fine tippets, and the specific emerger and soft-hackle patterns that move the reef's educated rainbows. Beyond the North Platte, the operation offers access to private ranch water on nearby spring creeks and the diverse bass and pike fishing in the North Platte reservoir chain. Gear rentals, fishing licenses, and comprehensive trip-planning assistance make the operation a one-stop resource for visiting anglers.

What Anglers Say

“Grey Reef in November is one of the best fishing experiences in the West — cold, clear, and absolutely full of big rainbows willing to take an emerger if you present it correctly. Our guide was technically superb and had genuine enthusiasm for the fishery that made the whole day enjoyable beyond just the fish count. We landed 18 rainbows, several over 20 inches, in four hours of wade fishing. Exceptional.”

Andrew H.

“First time fishing the North Platte and Wyoming Trout Guides made it a perfect introduction to Wyoming trout fishing. The drift through the canyon below Casper covered multiple completely different water types and the guide had us rigged appropriately for each section. The scenery through the canyon is stunning and the fishing was consistent all day. Professional, knowledgeable, enthusiastic about the sport.”

Deborah S.

“Central Wyoming doesn't get the fly fishing attention it deserves. The Grey Reef section and the upper canyon are serious, high-quality trout water and Wyoming Trout Guides has been guiding it at a high level for years. Year-round operation means you can plan a winter trip when the crowds evaporate and the big fish are still there. The staff know every section of this river cold.”
